The purpose of this example is to demonstrate how the principles in Syntactic Structures in Music can be used to harmonise a tonal melody.

By introducing cadences, static harmony and dynamic harmony, linear progressions and non-functional chords in sequence, we will ensure that all the harmonies fit correctly into the musical phrase. The example is designed to demonstrate as many concepts as possible rather than to be primarily melodic.

I have assumed for the purposes of this demonstration that the reader is familiar with the basic rules of voice leading. For example, the correct make up of chords, the preparation and resolution of discords, etc. The solution produced is not the only possible solution or the correct solution. However, by taking an approach based on good root progressions and syntactic structures, we should ensure that all harmonies fit correctly into the musical phrase.
