CHAPTER 8 - EXAMPLE MUSICAL ANALYSES

SCHUMANN - KINDERSZENEN NO. 1

This example musical analysis is of a short piano piece with simple voice leading patterns. For this reason, the underlying root progressions are easy to see. This example shows the conjoining of an incomplete and a complete phrase structure. The incomplete phrase here is a "Closing Section".

Please read the General Introduction, first. This analysis is broken down into the following stages:

a) Introduction and Analysis of the Formal Structure

b) Voice Leading Analysis and Chord Progression Analysis

c) Phrase Structure Analysis and Summary

If you are new to the principles of voice leading you should first read the Voice Leading Appendix. Please also refer to the Glossary of Symbols. Chapter 6: Extensions to the Basic Syntactic Structure will show more about how sub-phrases can be combined.
