CHAPTER 8 - EXAMPLE MUSICAL ANALYSES

BRAHMS ST ANTONI CHORALE VARIATIONS

This piece contains voice leading in multiple layers, therefore, I will concentrate more on the detailed voice leading surface than I will in other analyses. This example clearly demonstrates how the three syntaxes: Voice Leading Syntax; Root Progression Syntax; Musical Phrase Syntax work together in a tonal piece of music.

Please read the General Introduction, first. This analysis is broken down into the following steps:

1. Introduction and Analysis of the Formal Structure

2. Voice Leading Analysis

3. Chord Progressions Analysis

4. Phrase Structure Analysis and Summary

If you are new to the principles of voice leading you should read this section in conjunction with the Voice Leading Appendix. Please also refer to the Glossary of Symbols and Chapter 6: Extensions to the Basic Syntactic Structure.
