chord progressions in tonal music

This page is an index to an outline thesis that summarises the research behind the theory presented on this web site. The research is based on an analysis of about 100 movements from classical music and over 150 pieces from 20th century popular music.

A database of movements analysed is gradually being implemented onto this website. The first phase of this enables you to view graphs of root progressions for pieces on the database. See Comparative Root Progression Analysis Technique below.

This outline thesis takes the form of an analysis of a single movement from a single piece of music (The Mozart Piano Sonata K V310 (300d)). This section is intended for the reader who would like to see some of the evidence and thinking behind the theory. Most readers would wish to follow the Animated Demos, Example Harmonisation and Book Summary before reading this section.
